Review: Viajero Cali Hostel & Salsa School

I can honestly say that by far this is my favorite Viajero Hostel. This hostel was lively, full of fun people, and it’s located in the safe area of Cali, Colombia. The hostel concierge are very knowledgeable about activities that you can do outside of the hostel as well as within the hostel, including Salsa lessons. From what I remember doing was Salsa, Spanish-language classes, and a tour of Cali. I believe they have horseback but you’d have to find out more from them about that. Viajero Cali is located in San Antonio, which is the spot where you’ll find the majority of tourist. It’s relatively safe but never let your guard down. The area is next to the main street if you want to walk and explore and it’s also a 5-10 walk from El Peñon which is also another safe and upscale barrio next to San Antonio, which is also next to El Gato del Rio. The Hostel has it’s own food truck where you can purchase food if you’re not interested in traveling outside for restaurants, but if you’re an explorer, there are a plethora of restaurants to choose from within a 1km radius. The hostel is equipped with a pool and it’s cleaned EVERY MORNING regardless if someone uses it or not. Talk to everyone as this hostel is very easy to make friends. Night time is popping as the bar opens up and they got music playing while everyone chills and lounges around

Negatives

For me, there were only a couple of negatives. Breakfast can sometimes be a hit or miss. One day you’re having pancakes and eggs, other days it’s just arepas and fruit spreads. You take what you can get, and I would love to have the option of eggs and toast on more days than none. You can get a bowl of granola and cereal, and then you can request to eat it with the option of milk or yogurt. I personally liked this.

The rooms didn’t have air conditioner units so you would have to rely on the fans.

Smoking was the biggest negative for me. Everything else I like besides people smoking. Because Cali is hot, you would want to have the window open for some ventilation, but if you’re trying to sleep but the other guests are not ready to sleep yet, you can get loud chatter accompanied by cigarette smoke. This won’t bother everyone, but it was an issue for me as it kept waking me up. I do recommend getting a private room. It’s not that much extra, and you can pretty much sleep without clothes if it gets too hot, and the rooms do have fans and a way for you to control the windows. Some private rooms do have bathrooms so take advantage of that.

Other than the smoking, I totally love this place! There is so much to do that I had to extend my trip here a few times. I loved the food, I loved the vibes, I loved the pricing, and I loved the hospitality. I’m easily coming back here when I get back to Cali.
